A contemporary of Dieter Rams’s era, Alan Fletcher was dubbed “the most highly regarded graphic designer of his generation.”

A member of the now legendary design consultancy Fletcher/Forbes/Gill, and a founding partner of the international design group Pentagram, he belonged to an élite international group of designers who transcended the conventional boundaries of their craft.

We are delighted to have been asked to help mark the tenth anniversary of this prolific designer’s celebrated book ‘The Art of Looking Sideways’ at his alma mater, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.

Original artwork, preparatory materials and copies of the book are showcased on our humble shelving system in the Window Gallery on Charing Cross Road until 17 March 2011.

The Art of Looking Sideways is a primer in visual intelligence, an exploration of the workings of the eye, the hand, the brain and the imagination.

It does not try to teach lessons but instead is full of wisdom and insights collected from all over the world. A fitting volume for our shelves when you scan its cover and come across the idiom, “When less can be more than enough…”
