Vitsœ+Braun=Rams

4 January 2006

Braun-242-011

Amongst the frenzy of the West End sales, new year tranquillity descends at 72 Wigmore Street

Following exhibitions in Japan and at London’s Design Museum, a collection of Dieter Rams’ designs for Braun is now at home at Vitsœ at 72 Wigmore Street.

Many of the Braun items on display were being designed by Rams and his team in the late 50s and 60s, while he was working on the design of his new shelving system for Vitsœ.

A certain symbiosis developed and is shown in the exhibition: the smaller bay width of the shelving system was designed by Dieter Rams to match the width of Braun’s Audio 1 record player and loudspeaker.

A number of rare items are on display including the LE1 electrostatic loudspeaker that was licensed by Britain’s Quad company to Braun in 1959, and the TP1 portable record player (also from 1959), now known as the first Walkman.

(The exhibition ran from 4 January to 4 February 2006)
