The recent publication of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography has caused quite a stir.
Its 60 volumes and 60,000 pages contain 50,000 biographies of people who shaped the history of the British Isles and beyond, from the earliest times to the year 2000.
As Christopher Howse said in The Daily Telegraph on 25 September 2004, “Every home should have a set. Sell the car and buy the new DNB.”
