- What is Vitsœ?
Vitsœ included in Design Museum exhibition
August 2011
‘This is Design’ (opening 24 August 2011) celebrates the museum’s collection – a curation of objects which charts the history of design in mass production to highlight key items that have shaped the modern world.
The exhibition will bring together classic items, as well as more unusual objects, including prototypes, drawings, models, first editions and finished industrial objects under themes to demonstrate identity, manufacturing innovations, the digital revolution, and lifecycle.
Curator Alex Newson said: “Designed and built to last a lifetime, the 606 Universal Shelving System is the perfect exhibit to investigate issues concerning product lifecycle and obsolescence.”
Vitsœ nominated for the ‘Made by Britain’ project
July 2011
On 6 July 2011 Vince Cable launches the ‘Made by Britain’ project with details of the initial nominations from 40 MPs, including his entire ministerial team at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
During the summer break, MPs were asked to seek out an example of British design and manufacturing ingenuity.
Frank Dobson, Labour MP for Holborn and St. Pancras, selected Vitsœ as his nomination and said: “Vitsœ is a brilliant example of a design-led manufacturer, whose longevity is testament to the sheer quality and desirability of their product.”
A shelf is for life not just for Christmas…
July 2010
At Vitsœ, as we look to the festive season, we often find ourselves wondering how we can contribute to, and indeed encourage, a more sustainable Christmas-time. This year we venture that starting life with Vitsœ and living better, with less, that lasts longer is a good place to start.
So we have made the first step towards living better even easier for Christmas; for the first time, our starter collection will be available to pick up and take away from our Duke Street shop.
60’s 606 is 50
June 2010
Supported by the Geffrye Museum, to honour the 50th anniversary of its 606 Universal Shelving System, Vitsœ journeys back through time to embrace the year 1960 during the London Design Festival.
It was in this year that a revolutionary young designer, Dieter Rams, created this timeless piece of furniture which would go on to become a humble design classic in its own right. Vitsœ presents the passage of time and asks why has this product endured? Are there any lessons for us today?
A handsome new London shop
December 2009
2009 has been a busy year for Vitsœ. The furniture company best known for the 606 Universal Shelving System designed by Dieter Rams in 1960 celebrated its 50th anniversary with the launch of a new website, development of a retail partnership within Japan and by finding a new home on the streets of New York.
Now as the year draws to a close, it is with much pride that Vitsœ opens a new shop on its native soil in London, housed off Manchester Square at 3-5 Duke Street.
Vitsœ launches its online ‘starter collection’
September 2009
Vitsœ, the furniture company best known for the 606 Universal Shelving System designed by Dieter Rams, has launched its ‘starter collection’ that comprises four simple shelving configurations priced from £155 to £435 available to buy online at vitsoe.com.
Vitsœ’s renowned shelving system has often been referred to as “Lego for grown-ups” owing to the great flexibility in the positioning of shelves and cabinets on the elegant wall-mounted tracks. The fact that it is called a system is not accidental: you can add to it, rearrange it and, best of all, take it with you when you move.
Vitsœ opens in New York
September 2009
Vitsœ, the company best known for the 606 Universal Shelving System designed by Dieter Rams in 1960, is opening its doors in New York at 33 Bond Street a week after celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Located just off The Bowery, opposite Herzog and de Meuron’s 40 Bond, Vitsœ joins a neighborhood noted for its cobbled streets and distinctive mix of restaurants and shops.
